Education at the Early Learning Center

The Early Learning Center is the first formal partnership between Sheboygan Area School District (SASD) schools and families, offering 4-year-old kindergarten (4K) and early childhood programming. The 4K program features half-day classes, offered five days a week in either a morning or afternoon session.

Children who are four years of age, on or before September 1, are eligible to attend.

Parents have many wonderful opportunities to interact with their child throughout their time at the Early Learning Center. The Early Learning Center promotes student development in learning the social and academic skills needed to prepare for kindergarten. Instruction is developmentally appropriate in an environment that values cultural diversity and nurtures a love of learning. 

The Early Learning Center focuses on literacy and math skills to match instruction to the individual needs of each child. Teachers provide large group, small group, and one-on-one instruction. 4K students are hands-on learners by nature and are more engaged when using technology. The Early Learning Center has iPads and SmartBoards available for students to use. These devices teach students curricular material in literacy, math, and science. They also reinforce taking turns, social skills, cooperation, and problem-solving. 

Family involvement is a critical component of 4K and early childhood programs at the Early Learning Center. Parents are the first and most important teachers of their children. Therefore, it is essential that they be actively involved in their children’s education. A variety of family involvement options are available, including frequent family visits, parent education workshops, opportunities to volunteer in the classroom, and parent-child activities. School activities, like the Open House and Gingerbread House Making, promote partnerships with families.
